My Dad

Not only was yesterday Fathers' Day, but it was also my dad's birthday. Had he lived, yesterday would have been his 77th birthday. So, in honor of his birthday (I know, I know. A day late and a dollar short. Well, maybe not a dollar. More like 62 cents.), I have the best Dad story to share with you. (Sorry about not having an accompanying picture - I know there is one, but it's at Mom's apartment and I'm too danged lazy to look for it!)

My father had a pair of swimming trunks emblazoned with Campbells' Pork 'n Beans labels. Oh, yes. All you ladies are sweating out there, I can tell. He proudly wore said trunks every year during our beach trip just to get laughs. And with his baby/pot belly? He was a sexy beast, I tell you.

He also had a pair of large, clown sunglasses. He and cousin Mike made two sets of score cards, numbered one through ten. Mike, a very tall and very red-headed man (with orangutan orange-red hair strewn all over his chest), would sit at one end of our strip of beach and my dad would sit at the other end in his Pork 'n Beans trunks and over-sized sunglasses. And, you guessed it, they would score the women who walked by them. Oh, yes, my mother allowed this, as did Mike's wife, and the rest of the family. We all just attempted to ignore the train wreck going on at the tide line while us kids made sand castles and the other adults read their books. The women walking by our little group couldn't help but see these two jack-asses and laugh, giggle, snicker, and snort. I couldn't remember what was more funny, Dad and Mike or the reactions of the poor, hapless women who walked by.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Aw sweetie, that is a great memory! I hope that you will always hang onto those moments, which are the essence of who your dad was.

Peace - D

That IS a way cool beach story. I'm glad you shared that sweet memory---it's never too late ;-)

I love that.

Sounds like part of my husband's family. What a sense of humor!

Way funny. I can totally picture it!

LOL! I think that's how my oldest bro will be someday. My dad didn't quite go to those measures, but I do have a good story involving false teeth, super glue, and being incredibly cheap.

That is a great story, Heather. I cannot even imagine walking down the beach and seeing those two sitting there. I bet there are many women who reminisce with their families and say Remember the time we went to the beach and those two guys were sitting there...

That's pretty funny! Do you remember if they ever gave a woman a really low score? I wonder what her reaction would have been.

Happy Monday to ya.

Momma - These are my favorite moments, the moments when my dad was silly!

Turnbaby - I was so angry I logged in too late to share it on your show! Glad you enjoyed it!

Donna - Total goof ball!

MommyCosm - Glad you're back! I'll have to dig up one of those pictures and post it someday.

Molly's Mom - Oh, my dad so got into his false teeth!

NATUI - I never thought about those women reminiscing over that. I wonder what they think! :-)

Employee 3699 - I don't remember any low scores. Or, if there were, one would score low and the other high, for courtesy's sake.
