Hair Apparent

Back in 1995, I was suffering from some pretty nasty low self-esteem. What did I do? I took the advice of my 50-something boss, went to her hair salon, and got my hair completely chopped off. Think 5-inch-long ponytail gone in a second. And I walked out of there a 23-year-old woman with still-present low self-esteem and a 50-something short haircut. It was an unmitigated disaster.

I immediately began to grow my hair back and made it to chin-length until Gwyneth Paltrow's movie Sliding Doors and this cuteasallgetout* hair cut:

It was cute, kicky, and I would dress up my hair with sparkly bobby pins. It was fun! And high-maintenance. Once this hair style was out of my system, I went back to the business of growing and now, eight years later, I've had a pretty decent head-o-hair. But now? With kids? My hair only sees one style: all-day-wet in a clip. So very unattractive and certainly a hindrance in the bucking-up of my mental self-image.

So, I dug deep. I read Miss Britt's post about her new do. And then I saw my cousin's-in-law recent photo with her new short hair. And then I made a stupid, ridiculous bet with the Ty-man. I bet him that if McCain won, I would get bangs and start wearing my hair like Sarah Palin. Why, oh, why did I do that? I'm so damned impulsive. So stupid. Not because I dislike Gov. Palin or her hair, but because I have the biggest damned cowlick on the front of my head and cutting bangs? Would result in me looking like a pre-schooler with a hunk of hair sticking straight up out of my forehead. Knock out my top teeth and the look would be complete.

Rather than keep up with wet hair any longer (or face down the possibility of a daily wet Sarah Palin-do if Sen. McCain hits the big-time), I opted for this:

Please disregard the lack of make-up and the puffy eyes. PULEEZE!

Fun, angular, can still be pulled back, and it feels lighter, sort of the way my life is beginning to feel.

I love it. What say you?

*It's a word. In my universe, at least.

I don't dare comment on hair. Beyond something like: "Yes, love, it looks great." It's taken years for me to understand the bizarre relationship women have with their hair.

I don't know that you would have been in much jeopardy of losing that bet, however.

Two thumbs up!

I'm a big fan of the angled bob, and you wear it so well. You look fantastic!

Peace - D

I like it. It's the perfect length to throw into a ponytail on bad mommy days, yet you can take a few minutes to dress up too.
I'm in the process of growing mine right now. I've been growing and cutting, growing and cutting. Very indecisive.

Aren't new cuts that you love the best?

Your hair looks fantastic!

My word verify is 'folessru': as in "you're not getting it fo less r u?" Cuz I hate it when someone gets a better deal than I do.

I feel your pain. I haven't had a decent hairdo in at least 10 years. Mine is always up in a clip as well.
I love this new look on you! Very cute!

I think it looks great! I so so sooooo wish I could grow my hair out. It's been short for so many years and I'm sick of it, but every time I start to grow it out it gets in that "awkward stage" where I can't do a thing with it and I end up shanking it again.

I hate my hair.

I love it! It looks great on you - or, rather, you make that cut look great!

It looks fantastic!

That's bizarre, because 1995 was the year (the only year) where I chopped off my hair too. I looked like Peter Pan until the 'grow out of 1996' began. Banana clips and head bands.

This looks great though!

Other Heather - Thanks, hon!

Jenn - Thanks, darlin'!

A Free Man - HA! And I didn't think I'd lose the bet, but I wanted to make sure.

RiverPoet - Thank you, sweetie!

MommyCosm - I went through that growing/cutting thing for the longest time. You'll get to a stopping point. I promise.

Tuli - And I've decided to keep this cut for quite some time!

Employee No. 3699 - Thanks!

Avitable - Well, of course you do! It doesn't hurt that I paid you off! :)

Kaila - Yeah. It's hard on the self-esteem when the hair looks bad!

NATUI - Woo hoo! You know it!

Gypsy - Thank you, Miss Thang!

Evil Genius - Yeah. You just have to suck it up and get it through that awkward stage. 2000 was the year of awkward for my hair. Ish.

Sybil Law - Thank you!

Metal Mom - Younger is always a plus!

Duck - Head bands are a lifesaver!

Molly's Mom - Much thanks!

Teri - Oh, I will kick yo ass!
