Shiny and New

I like to imagine that the rings on my left ring finger are an outward symbol of my marriage. If you want to see the state of my marriage, just look at my ring. If you want to see the state of any marriage, just look at the rings because they tell a story. And yes, at the end of this post you'll get to see mine!

At first, there's the engagement ring. That perfect, gorgeous diamond. Is it round? That's for the simple, un-fussy bride-to-be. Then there's the marquis, a cut as regal as it's name. And my personal favorite, the emerald cut. It's bit square, like me, but not quite. Of course, the princess cut says it all.

When you're first married, the ring(s) on your left ring finger are new. That diamond is shiny and brilliant and the wedding band sparkles and catches the light, just like that brand-new, minutes-old marriage. Everything is fresh, unsullied, and you're just learning about the facets of your relationship with this person. Oh, you may have been together for several years, but there's now a new dimension, a new cut - if you will, to your relationship. There is now a set of vows, witnesses, pictures, and a piece of paper, making one plus one a union.

As a marriage progresses, as all marriages do, there are stumbles, a loss of newness, dings, and smudges. Like the ring itself, the sparkle and shine of the diamond turns dull and the gold becomes scratched and faded. If you don't care for the precious gem and metal given out of love, it becomes something akin to a gumball machine ring. This holds true for the marriage itself. Every now and then you have to stop, take a breath, and notice that your ring, your marriage, has lost its luster. It's then that you take the time to clean it and make it shine. The scratches on the gold are still there, giving it character, but the diamond now shines with a brilliance it once saw when it was new.

And, if you're lucky, you'll add to that ring a few more sparkles, a few more shines, to symbolize the years you've added to your togetherness, the smiles and laughter, the joys. And those gems? Those new bands? Have to be cared for as well, or they too will dull with age.

When I look at my rings, I see Ty-man and me. I see the sort-of square emerald-cut diamond that so perfectly represents my inner-geek and the need to break away from the Tiffany-cut norm. The yellow gold is the inner sunshine I so wish to project. My two thin bands are understated and simple because anything else would have been too much. For years, this was my left ring finger and it has perfectly fit my finger and who we are. While in Antigua, my gracious Ty-man added more. Those five emeralds represent the five members of our family and the birthstone of May, our wedding month. All these rings together, when shining and lustrous, represent the 13 wonderful years of our married lives together.

Sure, these rings will get dirty with dishwater, 409, sunscreen, makeup, food, Desitin, all the things that make up our lives. The diamond will get dirty and a film will cover the luster. But, hopefully, I'll keep looking at my ring, and my marriage, notice the loss of sparkle, and "clean up." And when you see my ring finger blinding you from afar you'll know that my marriage to the Ty-man is as beautiful as the rings I wear.

I'm Feelin' the Love Today!

A while back, a couple of sweeties gave me some great awards and I have yet to acknowledge and thank them.

First of all, there's Jayna over at My Longest Year. I've been reading her blog since I found the joy of blogging in August of last year. See, Jayna's husband is in Iraq on a 15-month deployment and Jayna is raising their daughter E on her own, for the moment. Once he gets home, I figure Jayna will be MIA from the blogverse for a while (understandable), but she's got a great blog, a great story, and great heart. Thanks hon for my blog buddies award! I love visiting your corner each day.

And Military Mom "Less Than 3" me! (FYI - and I had to look this up, <3 is the IM way of expressing a heart, so she loves me!). What can I say about Military Mom? She's a mom, in the military, who runs, has a Wonderdad for a hubby, and is funny! Love, love, lurv her!

So, now, to pass these babies on...

I read this stay-at-home dad blog. House Dad Chronicals. Damn, he makes me laugh every time I read him! And? He's a dead-ringer for DJ Lance from a psychedelic kids' show on Noggin called Yo Gabba Gabba! Terance, you are my Blog Buddy and I pass on to you the Blog Buddy Award!

And I send off the Less Than Three Award to Poetic License. Girlfriend has been going through some horrible medical stuff lately and, on top of that, she's a great writer and expresses herself wonderfully. Here you are, Momma! Love you!

Nothin' But Class!

Yeah, that's right. It's a classy blog, CofaCMG! Lots and lots of class. How do I know? Military Mom says so, that's how!

Here's what she has to say about my class: "My girl Heather, at Coalminer's Granddaughter because she is sincerely the sweetest person I have never met. And her? She knows how to class it up. What says 'Classy' better than 2 snot posts in one week? I ask you? Love it."

So, in light of snot posts making the joint classy, how much more classy can you get than a sigmoidoscopy?

Oh yes. I. Went. There.

All over it.

See, as if January 30th isn't already a horrible-enough day for me, I need to go off to my gastroenterologist and have a sigmoidoscopy.

What, pray-tell, is this sigmoidoscopy I speak of?

According to Wikipedia (which knows everything about everything - shuh) a sigmoidoscopy (gad - how many more times am I going to type it?) is a "minimally invasive medical examination of the large intestine from the rectum through the last part of the colon."

Well.

What that oh so fabulous definition doesn't tell you is that a sigmoidoscopy (keeping count?) is a "minimally physically invasive, highly emotionally invasive, medical examination of the large intestine from the rectum through the last part of the colon, during which you will be laying on your left side, experiencing your GI doc's Vaseline-covered finger shoved into your anus. THEN, you will watch a video monitor of the inside of your rear and get more intimate with your backside innards than you ever thought you would be. You will see blood vessels, 'roids, and the vestiges of poo your two enemas failed to clean out the night before. And? None of the cool AC/DC on your iPod can disguise the fact that a doctor and nurse are calmly looking at your backside innards while you're trying to make yourself as small as possible and not flinch every time he yanks that camera around."

Well, indeed.

According to my Mom, it's a "butt-oscopy."

Well, indeed-squared.

Did I just take that a step too far?

Yes, while going through said procedure, all I could think was, "Please, Earth, give me an early birthday present. Swallow me whole and leave no trace. That would be nice."

The good news is that all is well.

The bad news? I may not allow anyone within 10 feet of my flat butt for the next few weeks. Not even my favorite chair.

OK. Fine. Sean Connery can come near the butt, but NO ONE ELSE!

Thanks, Military Mom! You're a sweetie! So, I now get to pass this bit of class along to someone very deserving. I'm going to give this to my wonderful friend and sister-in-law, Vonda, and her family blog (The Livingston Family) about my bro Ian and their sweet little girl. See, they live in Germany and keep us all updated with their European goings-on. Her little one, Ella Rose, is such a beautiful little girl and graces every post of this blog. Vonda is a very classy lady and would never blog about snot or sigmoidoscopies (the count is 6, by the way). Thanks, Vonda, for giving us a bit of Ella Rose each and every day! Love and miss you!

Quick Commercial Break

OK, we'll take a quick break from our trip on the "way-back" machine.

Just spent the evening with Wayne and found out about his Thanksgiving spent at the hospital having the evil MRSA infection cut out of his leg and how at first he was depressed but then he realized, Hey, I've got two platefuls of food, Lortab, and no bitching family members. This is an AWESOME Thanksgiving! Yeah. Some people have all the luck. Well, lucky that he had Lortabs and no bitching family. Not so lucky about the methi.... methicillin-resistant staph....crystal meth... oh, screw it. Not so lucky about the flesh-eating crud.

Anyhoo, since I was hanging with Wayne, getting a new do, and not scanning in yearbook pictures, I just have to tell you about my blog review over at Ask And Ye Shall Receive (Yes, Kristi, their blog addy includes the f-word. Just take a deeeeeeep breath and click on the link. You'll be OK. No lightning bolts - promise). I submitted my blog a month ago for review, clicked on the Send button, and held my breath. Yes, I've been holding my breath for over a month. Ty-man has been fretting over my rather blue hue.

Well, the lovely Calamity reviewed my humble corner and gave me this rating:

(Yes, Kristi, that f-word again. I promise! That's it for.... well, for a while!)

God bless you, Calamity! You made my 2008! I have taken your concerns into consideration and have contacted my template designer with changes. Thanks! If any of you would like to read her review, please click here.

Oh, and? I'm yet again participating in The Great Quill Driving Competition with a short story submission. Get on over there, read the stories (each based on 18 words the lovely Cindra chooses at random), and vote! Can't tell you which one is mine - it's an anonymous competition! Enjoy!

Bling Kicks Ass!

Cyndi over at Military Mom is a cool chick. No, literally, she's a cool chick. She lives up in South Dakota - poor woman is an icicle.

Actually, she is a neat lady and she has graced me with a beautiful piece of bling... wanna see?

Awwwww, she thinks my blog is a treasure and this is what she had to say about my humble blog-bode:

What a funny chick! She always makes me laugh, and I am in awe of her because she is the only one of us I think has actually met other bloggers. And lived to tell about it. Also, she is a fellow Atlanta girl. Oh, and she and she put a picture of a penis bracelet on her blog (see 10 Dec Post). What more could you want, I ask you? You deserve this, because I wouldn't know what to do with myself at lunch everyday without your blog to read.

I. Am. Extremely. Humble.

When I started writing this crazy thing, I figured 'Kay. Teri will read it. Fang will read it. Ty-man and Mom will read it. Even the FIL Chuck will give it a go. That's about it.

Now, I have friends in South Dakota, Tennessee, Nevada, California, Oregon, several in Florida, and people in Europe, Singapore, and Australia finding my humble little corner.

I'm lucky, blessed, and loving every minute of this crazy blogging thing. Thanks so much, Cyndi, for giving me a wonderful blog present for Christmas!

Now, in the true spirit of blogging awards, I pass this award on to Charlie of Charlie Is My Name. Charlie is an 8-year-old boy with autism who blogs whatever is on his mind. He seems to be a huge Stargate Atlantis fan and his mom helps him with the typing of his blog - a blog that has helped immensely with his development. Check him out and leave him a comment or two. It will make his day!

I also pass this along to Ms. Not Afraid To Use It. Michelle is kick. ass. And I'm going to someday convince her to adopt me because her cooking sounds dee-licious!

And, finally, I pass this along to Andrea over at Mom to the Fey. I'm so proud of her for announcing to the blogosphere that she's Wiccan. You go, girl!

Fab, I would pass this along to you, but I know you detest such frippery. But, if you want it, it's yours! You know I lurv you!

OK, OK, enough. This is just getting too syrupy sweet. Back to work people!

He Likes Me! He Really Likes Me!

Christmas came early to the Coal Miner's Granddaughter. Observe the following pictures.

Kids are asleep, my lunch is consumed, time to check the mail. Goodness, what's that? It's an envelope all the way from Florida, care of Mr. Fabulous!

Hmmm, what could it be, I wonder? It's not often I receive packages from someone other than Dark Horse Comics or Barnes & Noble. Let's open it and see...

Well, it's purple, that's a good sign. Wait, I know what this is... could it be? Could it truly be? YES! Thank the sculpey gods above, it's my very own "Fab"ricated Sculpey Penis Bracelet!

Get ready, folks, 'cause I'm pretty sure these babies are going to sweep the nation and I'm one of the first to own one! Notice the way, in the photo below, how it hugs the wrist, how it complements one's hand...

Thanks, Fab! You rock! I'm wearing it as I blog! This will be my blogging inspiration, my muse, and the best part? It has Fabby fingerprints, glazed and baked in, all over it!

Blowing kisses!

Ed. note: I cannot be held responsible for the horrendous state of my hair or the number of nose hairs you can see/count in the above pictures. I'm the only one in my house, at the moment, who can handle and use the camera. Self portraits, looking like you have only one arm, because the other arm is occupied with taking said photos, suck. You know this and I know this. Besides, if I wait for Ty-man to get home, he'll probably get jealous and try to Bogart my bracelet. Damned if I'm going to let that happen!

06 November 2007

First, I Would Like to Thank the Academy...

I have received my very first blog bling! Woo hoo! I'm so very excited to have received an award for my blog.

Ms. Not Afraid To Use It graced me with this wonderful award after we found out that not only are we sufferers of the dread endometriosis, but that we also have the same friggin' surgeon who removed our endo and helped us have kids. Talk about your seren-you're-kidding-me-dipity. Not only is this world small, it throws you for the coolest loops sometimes! NATUI is in the Atlanta area, visiting family, this week, and we'll be hooking up this coming Thursday evening. I will be sure to take pictures of this momentous occasion and post them here on Friday (as long as I'm conscious - she said something about sippable chocolate, hmmmmm).

All the women in my family have endometriosis (in fact, my aunt was unable to have children because of it) and I have been cursed with it as well. In addition, I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) which caused infertility. I went to see Dr. Ceana Nezhat (at the recommendation of a friend) and he not only diagnosed my PCOS, he performed the surgery that got me on the right track to removing my ovarian cysts, the endometriosis, and reversing my infertility. It's because of his work that I have my three beautiful children. So, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Again, thanks hon, for my very first blog award, and I'm so very proud to graciously accept it! If you would like to see more about the award and my story, click on the award graphic above. And, by accepting it, it is now my job to pass it along to another worthy woman who has gone under the knife but cannot be kept down by her endometriosis. Here you go, Vonda! I love ya, doll and that sweet little Ella Rose is an absolute miracle!
